A specialist brings clinical knowledge, training and judgement that a family does not replace. A family, however, sees something different: the daily process between appointments.
Sleep changes, subtle behavioural patterns, medication effects, triggers and functional variation can be visible at home long before they appear in a periodic consultation.
Observation needs a method
Family knowledge becomes more useful when it is structured: date, context, frequency, duration, associated factors and the difference from the person's usual baseline. Recording everything without criteria can create noise; recording nothing can lose valuable signals.
Complement, never replace
The goal is not to turn parents into clinicians. It is to help the clinical system hear a longitudinal source that is often underused.
The family does not replace clinical judgement. It contributes the continuity that a consultation, by its nature, cannot always capture.
